Yazd is one of the few cities that rightfully make the claim to be the ‘oldest living city on Earth’. It is famously known for its winding lanes, mud brick houses, and forests of badgirs – ancient systems of wind towers that capture air and vent cooler currents into the buildings. I had a Farsi-only speaking guide, which made communication limited to hand gestures and my limited understanding of Persian. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed I wasn’t staying in a khan-e sonnati (traditional house) in the old city, but I still enjoyed Yazd’s various sites, particularly its Zoroastrian landmarks.
