Kolkata, India

After the cool weather of Darjeeling, I found my way to the bustling and heat of Kolkata.   Fr. Santi had connected me to the Jesuits in Kolkata, where I had ended up staying.  I as able to get some help from a fellow train passenger who have me a taxi lift to the school and church where the Jesuits took up residence.  The three major highlights of this trip was seeing Sr. Cyril, who I met back in Winnipeg, and is part of the Loreto Nuns, visiting the Victoria Memorial, and paying homage to Mr. Teresa at her tomb.

Reuniting with family and friends around the world, camping, lobster cookout with fans at the camp, biblical rainfall in the queue, @ArcadeFire opening, heartfelt rendition of Stay (Faraway, So Close), and first and last appearance of ‘40’ on the tour. Having seen @U2 33 times on this tour, Moncton will always have a deep rooted positive memory in me.

This concert easily slots into my top 5 #U2 concerts that I’ve experienced. Getting here started right after the #U2360 Perth show back in December 2010. My friend Jana (who was from São Paulo) encouraged Martijn and I to get to Brasil later that April and she’d take care of GA tickets for us. A few months later, I landed in São Paulo where the ever-present Cathal McCarron picked me up from the airport and took me to Jana’s place to drop off my stuff and depart with Amp, Colleen, Martijn, and Jana to go to the first São Paulo show. It was the morning of the show and there were at least 10,000 fans already lined up. We enjoyed the first two concerts near the soundboard and were thrilled to hear the debut of Zooropa. It was for the third concert where Amp and I queued up overnight in the rain and eventually made it to the front for the last concert. There are several memories that stand out for me during that show – reuniting with GA friends in a faraway land and meeting new friends, Muse opening as the warm-up act – they were electric, fans dancing on the floor during the pre-show music, Brasilian samba artist Seu Jorge joining the band to perform a Kraftwerk cover of Das Model, and Bono being frightened by a giant insect sitting on his microphone during Moment of Surrender. If you listen to the bootleg, you’ll hear him: “My body's now a begging bowl that's begging to get back, [son of a BITCH!]” the moment he opens his eyes and sees the giant bug. Unforgettable.

Concert favourite lists are highly subjective. Personally, this show stood out because of the concert itself as well as everything else that happened around the concert while there: Going to Ubatuba with Jana and Colleen to surf, enjoying feijoada and a Brasilian steak house for the first time, and going to a local community centre to dance and listen to traditional music.
